Arkansas-Napeste-Akansa is a large scale mapping project in which I am exploring the topography and wildlife of the Arkansas river across all six states. From its birth in Colorado through to when it joins with the Mississippi River and flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The river was named Napeste by the Spanish in the 1540s and then Akansa by Jacques Marquette in 1673. At the border of Arkansas and Mississippi the river loses its name as it joins the Mississippi river. It is at this point that I honor that the river doesn’t merely disappear, but joins another river until they both feed into the Gulf of Mexico.
